MODA Sampler Block Shuffle Week #9

Dear Moose Friends,

I can’t believe that the MODA Sampler Block Shuffle is almost complete.  As I think back on all my events and deadlines during November and December I am amazed that I was able to keep up.  This quilt will hold special memories for me; preparing for Jillian’s wedding, Thanksgiving, Christmas decorating and shopping.  And most importantly, my family gathered together to celebrate all of it.

Have you had a chance to make any of the suggested alternative color options for some of the blocks? Have you changed the position of any of the units to create a new look for a block?   Block #25 would be a block that I would suggest ‘auditioning’ fabrics before sewing your final units together.   Try turning the flying geese units so that the ‘nose of the geese’ are pointed inward to give the block a different look.   You will also notice that each block takes on a new look when it is placed on point.

I’m always thinking of changes I could make to a block.  I had resisted the urge so far, but Block #26 was my undoing.  It looks like a leaf and a leaf should have a stem, right?  And if I’m going to add that, why not make it a little more scrappy.

Block 26

If you would like to make these changes, I am including the measurements used.

Uneven 9-patch unit:

4 light squares 1-1/4″ x 1-1/4″

1 light square 1″ x 1″

4 dark rectangles 1″ x 1-1/4″

Follow the picture to piece the uneven 9-patch unit, it should measure 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ unfinished.

Block 26 stem 1

Block 26 stem 2Stem unit:

1 background square 3″ x 3″

1 stem strip 1″ x 4″

Cut the background square once on the diagonal, piece the stem strip in as shown at left, square this unit to 2-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ unfinished.

Blocks 25, 26 and 27
This week we are providing the suggested MODA Sampler Block Shuffle finishing and inner border instructions.   You, of course, can ‘Moose It Up’ with your own version for finishing your quilt.    Did you have a chance to make additional blocks?  To test a new idea or technique?   You may want to ‘piece’ your quilt backing, try a little back art with those additional/orphan blocks.

Next week we will provide the final 3 blocks for the MODA Sampler Block Shuffle.   If you have missed any of the block instructions please stop by the shop and with a purchase we can provide any of the instructions that you need.

I hope you all have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
