I have numerous Instagram accounts that I regularly follow because they provide inspiration and spark my creativity. One of my favorites is A Needle Pulling Thread Quilt Shop in Digby, Nova Scotia. Many of their designs use reproduction fabrics, fabric designs that I dearly love!
Like they did last year, they are again sponsoring a weekly challenge for their followers. This year’s challenge block is called “Flock of Geese” and finishes at 6″ square (6 1/2″ unfinished). Instead of being only a follower, this year I have decided to accept their 52 week challenge. After downloading the initial instructions, you are on your own to stitch your weekly block. Each week you piece the same block design, but with a different choice of fabrics. It’s a great way to use your scraps and experiment with color placement.
You can find the instructions for the “Flock of Geese” block through their instagram account @anptquiltshop and also their Facebook page, A Needle Pulling Thread Quilt Shop, posted on January 12, 2017. UPDATE as of January 26, 2017: A link for downloading the instructions for A Needle Pulling Thread Quilt Shop’s 52 week challenge is provided on their January 4, 2017 Facebook post.
Most of you know that I love, love, love small blocks. As I was making some 6″ Cake Stand blocks one evening, I realized I was cutting some of the same size HST(s) for my Cake Stand block as I had cut for the Flock of Geese block. I started thinking. What if I started a 52 week challenge for our Quilted Moose friends using the Cake Stand block that I was making. Wouldn’t it be fun at the end of the year to have 52 each of “Flock of Geese” and “Let Them Eat Cake (Cake Stand)” blocks to incorporate into a quilt design.
To help you with the weekly commitment of making your blocks; I propose that you pick a specific day of the week to cut and sew your blocks. I’m sure that you have read…it takes 21 times doing a certain task to create a habit. So, half-way through the challenge you will have established a creative habit; and, you will be well on your way to completing your challenge quilt. A win-win!
